Trans means across, or beyond in Latin. A transgender person is the collective name for different ways people have of viewing their own gender identity (apart from a man in a man’s body and a woman in a woman’s body), and how people express that identity. Another way to express this is to say that a transgender person is someone who – either wholly or partially – does not identify with their biological gender.
