Coil

The coil is a type of contraception which is placed in the womb by a doctor. There are two types of coil, the copper coil and the hormonal coil. The copper coil affects the mucous membrane of the womb so that it is not able to receive a fertilised egg. This means that the egg is rejected from the womb after fertilisation (after a new life has started). Even though this happens very early in a pregnancy, we don’t recommend the use of contraceptives which work after fertilisation. A hormonal coil contains a hormone that prevents some women from ovulating. However, some women do ovulate, and this can lead to an egg being fertilised. In such cases, the fertilised egg is rejected from the womb, in the same as when a copper coil is used. Therefore we do not recommend the use of hormonal coils.
