The morning-after pill (also known as emergency contraception) can be taken by women who have had sexual intercourse without contraception, or where the contraception has failed, for example a torn condom, and who may get pregnant without wanting to. It should be taken as soon as possible after sex. If the pill is taken a short time after the last period it might stop ovulation. However, if ovulation has already occurred, then a sperm might have joined an egg. In this case, the woman is pregnant. In some countries the morning-after pill is available over the counter at the chemist.
